Pre-departure induction, training and support

Volunteers taking part in overseas projects should receive in-depth training before they depart. This should cover the different aspects of the project including:
  • Information on the partner organisation and the project
  • Volunteer roles and responsibilities
  • Skills training relevant to the role
  • Fundraising
  • Culture and customs
  • Health and safety
  • Project specific policies e.g. safeguarding and child protection
  • Communicating their experiences appropriately e.g. blogging and social media
  • Project evaluation

This can be supplemented by a source of information such as a website (e.g. Team Uganda) or volunteer handbook.

The Volunteering and Community Engagement Team can provide advice and support around training for overseas volunteering and have some resources and online training courses you may find useful, including:

  • Fundraising Toolkit
  • Keeping Children safe: the role of volunteers
Once in-country a local orientation may include things like an introduction to the host organisation and community, getting to know the area, language skills, practicalities (shops, pharmacies, getting a mobile phone sim), local transport, the accommodation and who’s who in-country.
